New Community Land Plan Comes as Mango Hill Outgrows Its Old Hall

Land will be acquired for new community facilities at Mango Hill under a local budget allocation, as rapid population growth puts pressure on the suburb’s existing infrastructure.

City of Moreton Bay’s 2026–27 budget earmarks funds for the acquisition alongside road and drainage upgrades at Rose, Mary and Winifred streets and playground equipment renewal at Danzy Buchanan Park. Managed by the Mango Hill Progress Association on Council’s behalf, the existing community centre beside Danzy Buchanan Park remains available for hire.

The Council lists the venue’s maximum capacity as 70 people, describing it as suitable for small functions.

Demand outpaces older infrastructure

When the Mango Hill Progress Association formed in 1986, the village comprised fewer than 100 homes with minimal local amenities. The association later helped establish the facilities at Danzy Buchanan Park, including the community centre precinct.

Australian Bureau of Statistics census data tracks a dramatic expansion since that era, with the local population rising from 4,340 residents in 2011 to 8,434 in 2016 and 14,921 in 2021 — a 244 per cent increase over a decade.

The modest hall continues to host weekly, fortnightly and monthly bookings for fitness, dance, meetings and social gatherings, though community leaders have long flagged capacity limits.

In 2024, the Progress Association campaigned for a dedicated neighbourhood centre to serve Mango Hill, North Lakes and Griffin, noting the existing venue was heavily booked and lacked space for broader social services, support programs and private consultations.

Location vulnerabilities have added to those concerns. Severe weather in March 2022 inundated the Danzy Buchanan Park facility, sending approximately 300 millimetres of floodwater through the hall and covering nearby tennis and basketball courts in mud before volunteers completed a major clean-up.

Local venue options expand

The Danzy Buchanan Park hall is not the sole venue operating in the area.

Opened in 2020, the Y Mango Hill Community Centre on Halpine Drive provides a 182-square-metre community hall, four learning spaces, a half basketball court and outdoor areas. That site regularly hosts workshops, tutoring, martial arts, business seminars and religious services.

While the Y offers an alternative venue, the progress association has maintained its push for broader, purpose-built neighbourhood spaces.

Future site details undisclosed

Council’s budget allocation signals progress, though specific project parameters remain unconfirmed. Official budget documentation does not yet identify the proposed location, parcel size, construction schedule or planned facility mix for the new land acquisition.

With land acquisition now formally budgeted, attention shifts to how Council will address the long-term facility needs of Mango Hill’s expanding population.
