A busy stretch of Nathan Road in Rothwell is set for an upgrade, with new road, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructure planned between Lakeview Promenade and Pegasus Street.

The project will widen the road and improve access to the Nathan Road Sports Ground, while also preparing infrastructure for the next stage of the sporting precinct’s redevelopment. The works are intended to improve safety for different road users as traffic demands increase in the area.
New Facilities for Road Users

The planned design includes new pavement and a wider road cross-section that will connect with adjoining sections of Nathan Road. One traffic lane will run in each direction, alongside on-road cycle lanes.
Kerbside parking and a pathway are also planned along the frontage of the sports ground. Channelised turning lanes will provide access into the sporting precinct, while a pedestrian refuge near Pegasus Street will give people a designated place to cross the road in stages.
Wildlife protection is another part of the upgrade. Fauna fencing is included in the city’s published project scope to help protect animals in the area. The combination of road improvements, cycling infrastructure and pedestrian facilities is intended to cater for different types of road users along this section of Nathan Road.
Early Works for Sports Ground Expansion

The project will also include preliminary infrastructure for the second stage of the Nathan Road Sports Ground redevelopment, preparing the precinct for future sporting facilities.
The planned works include earthmoving for future playing fields and a new clubhouse, along with stormwater drainage and service conduit installation. Temporary sediment and erosion controls will be used during construction, and the project scope includes an expanded car park.
The City of Moreton Bay has identified the early works as a benefit for the Redcliffe Tigers AFL club. However, the available project information does not specify when the future fields and clubhouse will be completed or open for use.
The combined scope means the road upgrade will involve more than changes to traffic lanes and pedestrian access. It will also prepare parts of the sporting precinct for further development.
Construction Expected Before Christmas
Construction on the Nathan Road upgrade is expected to start before Christmas 2026, with work anticipated to continue into mid-2027.
The City of Moreton Bay’s project page lists late 2027 as the estimated completion date. The mid-2027 timeframe refers to the expected construction period reported for the works, while late 2027 remains the city’s published estimate for completion.
Further details about construction staging and temporary traffic arrangements have not been confirmed in the available project information. These details will be important for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians travelling through the area while work is underway.
