Mango Hill Property Fire Sparks Emergency Declaration on Sunday Morning

Emergency services worked throughout Sunday to contain a significant fire that destroyed multiple sheds at a Mango Hill property and prompted an emergency declaration in the surrounding area.

The blaze erupted at a property on Kinsellas Road West just before 6.30am on 28 December, with Queensland Fire Department crews arriving to find three sheds fully engulfed in flames.

Six fire crews attended the scene, battling the inferno until approximately 10.30am before bringing it under control. According to Queensland Fire Department, the sheds contained tyres and various other materials, with the burning rubber producing thick black smoke visible throughout the neighbourhood.

Queensland Police declared an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act shortly after 7am, encompassing Kinsellas Road West, Diamond Jubilee Way and Waler Close. The declaration was revoked at 10.56am, according to Queensland Police News.

During the emergency period, residents in the affected streets were asked to remain indoors with windows closed and air-conditioning systems set to recirculation mode where possible. Members of the public were urged to avoid the area.

Four people at the property were assessed by paramedics for minor injuries but none required hospitalisation.

Atmospheric testing conducted at the scene returned nil readings, indicating the air quality was safe, a Queensland Fire Department spokesperson confirmed.

By mid-afternoon, firefighters were still working to extinguish remaining hotspots and had requested specialist extraction equipment to reach areas of concern. Crews remained on scene into the evening to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Fire investigators were also called to determine the cause of the blaze.

An excavator was brought in to help pull apart material within the sheds to allow firefighters better access to hotspots.

Several neighbours reported witnessing the dramatic scene unfold. Sam Sood, who was visiting family in the area for Christmas, said the fire erupted at the property directly behind his sister’s home.

Local resident Jekope Nuke indicated that rubbish was often burned at the property’s backyard.

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said residents had previously lodged multiple complaints with the Moreton Bay Regional Council regarding smoke from burning activities at the property. The neighbour said complaints were made because smoke would drift into the neighbouring unit complex and had a chemical smell, but they were told the burning was technically contained within a steel drum and council could not take action.

Mr Sood mentioned his sister had previously raised concerns about chemical odours and several fires at the property.

Dozens of residents from the neighbouring unit complex were evacuated and unable to return for several hours while crews worked to control the fire.

The City of Moreton Bay Council was contacted for comment but did not respond by publication time.

There is no suggestion of criminal wrongdoing in relation to the incident or the property’s occupants.

North Lakes Woman Rescued from House Fire After Neighbours and Firefighters Join Forces

A North Lakes woman has been rescued from a serious house fire that engulfed her home on Thursday evening, with neighbours and emergency services working together in a dramatic rescue effort.

Emergency services were called to the property on Rawlins Crescent just after 5pm on 2 October, following reports of a house fire. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Police all attended the scene.

Firefighters were forced to cut through the garage door to access the burning home, with aerial footage capturing the extent of the blaze and the emergency response.

The 47-year-old woman was evacuated from the property and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. In the crucial moments before firefighters arrived, neighbours sprang into action, with one resident breaking a front window using a pot plant in an attempt to help the trapped woman. Other residents tried to tackle the flames using a garden hose.

All other occupants of the home have been accounted for and were unharmed, according to Queensland Police.

The fire, which caused significant damage to the property, took firefighters more than two hours to bring under control, with the blaze finally extinguished around 7.30pm.

Queensland Police have confirmed that investigations into how the fire started are ongoing. Authorities conducted a thorough search of the property following the incident.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Fire Strikes Dakabin Waste Management Facility

A large fire erupted at the Dakabin Waste Management Facility on Old Gympie Road this Wednesday afternoon, prompting an emergency declaration by local authorities.

The blaze, which began in a scrap metal pile at the Council-operated facility, required multiple fire crews to bring under control. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and officials declared an emergency at 5 PM, which was later revoked as firefighters gained the upper hand.

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) maintained four crews on site to monitor the situation. “Crews will monitor through the night so it does not spread. It is all under control and is still creating some smoke,” a QFD spokesperson said.

The burning material reportedly consisted of various waste items, including rubber and mattresses, which generated thick smoke affecting surrounding Dakabin neighbourhoods into the evening. Local residents were advised to close windows and doors and keep respiratory medications close by if needed.

A City of Moreton Bay Council spokeswoman confirmed the incident: “Fire crews and QPS are on site. All customers were evacuated.” Images shared on social media platforms showed dense smoke blanketing the Dakabin sky.

By 8:45 PM, crews had successfully extinguished the flames, though council and facility owners continued monitoring operations overnight to prevent any flare-ups. No injuries were reported in connection with the industrial fire.

The Dakabin Waste Management Facility serves as a key waste disposal site for residents in the Moreton Bay region.

Joseph Bijumon, owner of the French’s Forest IGA, was preparing for what is typically one of the busiest days of the year on the public holiday. But his busiest plans went up in smoke as the fire raged through his fully-stocked supermarket.

“This morning I got a security call and my cameras, they are always watching the temperatures of the fridges and freezer temperatures went up and they called me,” Bijumon recounted. He arrived to find police and fire crews outside trying to extinguish the flames.

With power cut to the entire precinct, Bijumon was forced to discard all frozen, refrigerated, and meat products from his ravaged store. “I’m okay, a bit upset, I was working hard last week for today only and the shop is fully stocked.

“There is no power at all, all my meat everything is gone.”

Fourteen fire crews managed to extinguish the flames within two hours, though the damage had been done. A spokeswoman for the impacted Bazza’s Bakehouse said the family business was devastated by the incident.

Nearby resident David Nicholson witnessed the fire’s escalation. “It gradually started spreading sideways … I think it started at the fish and chip shop and spread across to the bakehouse and onto the IGA.”

Queensland police have declared the site a crime scene as investigations continue into the cause of the destructive blaze that has left the Petrie community reeling. As Nicholson said, “People will be disappointed they can’t get their pies today.”
