Koala Alert at Youngs Crossing Upgrade Puts Joyner Drivers on Notice

A single koala in a roadside tree near Youngs Crossing has become a sharp reminder that this major road upgrade is unfolding in a living habitat, not just a construction corridor. A community warning from Moreton Bay Koala Rescue has put local drivers on notice, urging them to slow down near the work zone at Joyner, as the animal could come down and try to cross the road.

The warning followed a Facebook post from Moreton Bay Koala Rescue on 1 April, which flagged a koala near Youngs Crossing Road and asked motorists to drive with care.

By April 15, construction at Youngs Crossing was still active, with the City of Moreton Bay listing ongoing bridge work, piling, earthworks, traffic signal works and vegetation management on its official project page, last updated in April 2026.

The combination of wildlife movement and heavy machinery makes this local issue feel very urgent.

Youngs Crossing Road in Joyner is part of a major upgrade running from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road, on the section that crosses the North Pine River. Council describes it as one of the city’s largest road projects, with reduced speed zones in place, including a temporary 40 km/h limit along Youngs Crossing Road during construction.

The koala sighting is not just a one-off roadside moment for residents. It taps into a broader fear that animals are being pushed closer to traffic as work continues through an area they already use. In project material for March 2026, Seymour Whyte, working on behalf of the city, said works would include retaining walls, temporary pavements, drainage, piling, crane operations, traffic signal works and vegetation management, with some activity starting from 4:00 a.m. and other work taking place at night when needed.

The rescue group’s role also helps explain why the post carried weight in the community. Moreton Bay Koala Rescue says it runs a free 24/7 rescue and ambulance service for koalas across the region and asks people to report sick, injured, displaced or healthy koalas when they are spotted in risky situations.

The bigger public message is simple: drivers passing through Youngs Crossing are not just moving through a road project, but through an area where wildlife still needs room to survive.

While the upgrade is designed to improve safety, traffic flow and flood resilience between Petrie and Joyner, the koala sighting shows why many locals remain focused on what is happening at ground level right now, especially when construction and wildlife share the same narrow space.

Street Spotlight: Oxford St, Joyner

At first glance, Joyner is a quiet pocket of Moreton Bay — a suburb defined by leafy streets, family homes, and the winding course of the North Pine River. But to understand this place is to see how water, land, and people have shaped one another for decades. It is here, where the North Pine River and Sideling Creek meet in a gentle, swirling confluence, that the story of Genesis Christian College takes root — not just as a school, but as part of Joyner’s living landscape.

The rivers came first. Long before the sound of school bells, the junction of creek and river carved out a broad sandbank, a gift of nature that became a beloved swimming and fishing spot for locals. Children learned to swim there; families picnicked on its shores. The meeting of waterways did more than provide recreation — it shaped the soil, the vegetation, and even the settlement patterns that followed. It also set the stage for the kind of careful planning that future development around Youngs Crossing Road would require.

Just beyond that river bend lies the land where Genesis Christian College now stands. Before classrooms rose and playgrounds echoed with laughter, the site was an equestrian training ground, a place where hooves beat the dust and riders learned their craft. That earlier life lends the land a layered story — from horses to homework, from paddocks to purpose.

When the property was purchased in 1989, the vision was bold but humble: a school that would serve the growing Joyner community. Two years later, in 1991, Genesis Christian College opened its doors to just 35 students, teaching from demountable classrooms while a nearby church building was adapted for school use. It was a modest start, but one deeply tied to the character of its surroundings — shaped by the rivers, shaded by native trees, and grounded in Joyner’s evolving identity.

Childcare Centre Added to Neighbourhood Hub Plans in Joyner

A childcare centre has been proposed for a new neighbourhood hub development in Joyner, alongside retail and health services near a major bridge upgrade.

Retail and Services Expansion Near Youngs Crossing Bridge Site

Plans for a neighbourhood centre in Joyner have been expanded to include a new childcare facility, following a recent milestone in a major nearby transport project.

The 11-hectare site at 274 Youngs Crossing Road is already approved for shops, a service station, food and drink outlets, and a healthcare facility. The proposed change adds a dedicated childcare centre to the development.

Development Location and Site History

The original application for the neighbourhood centre received approval in 2022. The development area sits roughly 200 metres from the construction site of a new bridge over the North Pine River, part of ongoing upgrade works on Youngs Crossing Road.

Current structures on the land include a house, sheds, stables, storage facilities, and horse paddocks. These are expected to be cleared for the development.

Proposed Changes to Site Use

The proposed childcare centre would accommodate up to 160 children and employ around 30 staff. It is positioned near the entrance of the site.

The wider development also features a 570sqm space for healthcare use and 125 parking bays, including five for people with a disability. Discussions have taken place with Absorbent Minds Montessori Early Education regarding the childcare service.

Infrastructure Works at Youngs Crossing Progressing

The neighbourhood centre is located near one of the largest road upgrades in the region. The Youngs Crossing project spans more than one kilometre, from Protheroe Road to Dayboro Road, and includes a new 200-metre bridge west of the existing river crossing.

The transport corridor is being upgraded to improve flood resilience, traffic safety, and capacity, in response to population growth and increased vehicle demand. Construction activities began in July, with a principal contractor engaged to carry out major works valued at $86 million.

Total investment in the project exceeds $66 million in combined contributions.

Outlook for the Joyner Community

If approved, the childcare centre would complete the neighbourhood precinct. Both the centre and transport upgrades are expected to support access to services and improve movement across Joyner.
