The accolades arrived following the latest A better choice! Retailer of the Year – People’s Choice Awards, an initiative driven by over 14,500 public votes. Nestled at 728 Gympie Road, the market maintains its edge by dispatching teams to the Brisbane Markets every single morning. This daily selection process ensures that every piece of produce hitting their shelves has been personally vetted for freshness.

What began in the 1980s as a modest operation involving a single truck and the founding brothers has matured into a multi-generational cornerstone of the region. Today, the store hums with the activity of 50 to 60 local staff members under the guidance of the second generation. Manager George Macaron reflects that the shop’s true value lies in the personal connection they maintain with the community, an effort that goes well beyond the standard retail transaction. 

The convenience is compounded by the nearby presence of Warbys Butchers, effectively turning this corner of Gympie Road into a one-stop hub for local families.

Across the region, VC Fruit Market at 18 Ferny Way has captured a similar spirit of success. Owners Richy and Neha Singh have cultivated a loyal following by prioritising relationships over volume. Rather than hoarding stock, they make the trek to the Brisbane Markets five days a week, ensuring their inventory of seasonal fruit, deli items, and spices remains perpetually crisp. 

The store, which operates daily between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, operates on a simple premise: getting to know the customer’s name matters just as much as the quality of the produce.

Andrew Young, managing director of Brisbane Markets Limited, notes that these local stores act as vital links between Australian growers and everyday kitchen tables. While the Sunshine Coast’s Erbacher’s Fruit and Vegetables secured the top prize this year, the consistent recognition of independent stores from Carindale to Toowoomba suggests a significant shift in how local communities choose to fill their pantries.
