The Australian Government has announced a $450,000 grant for the Moreton Bay Regional Council to improve parking in North Lakes. The suburb will soon have digital street signage to tell drivers how many free carparks are available on each street. A smartphone app is also being developed to show a virtual map of free and occupied spaces to help give drivers real-time information. The project is expected to be completed by March 2019.
Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor has made the announcement on 14th of November. He has been joined by Luke Howarth MP, Federal Member for Petrie and Councillor Julie Greer from Moreton Bay Regional Council in making the announcement.
“The Smart Cities and Suburbs Program supports local communities to deliver technology solutions to critical urban problems, making our cities, suburbs and regional centres great places to live, work and play,” Assistant Minister Taylor has explained during the announcement.
“Parking and traffic congestion are major issues in our community and it is brilliant to see an innovative approach to solve these problems for local residents and businesses,” Mr Howarth has chimed in, adding that the Moreton Bay Regional Council has done a best job at cutting congestion in North Lakes.
Calls for tenders for the design, installation, and operation of the system are expected to happen in the coming weeks. Councillor Greer hopes that local businesses, the school, and community will participate in all surveys and related trials that will test the effectiveness of upcoming proposals.
The $450,000 grant is part of Round One of the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program that the Australian Government has announced on 17th of March. Round Two is expected to open in the first half of 2018. A total of $50 million has been allotted for the initiative.
Ultimately, the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program aims to improve the liveability, productivity, and sustainability of all Australian cities and towns.
Santa is staying in North Lakes from 12th of November until 24th of December and children can meet him at Westfield North Lakes. His visit comes just in time, after the state LNP and ALP announced projects aimed at increasing the police presence at Westfield North Lakes.
Safety at Westfield North Lakes
Early in November, LNP state candidate for Bancroft, Kara Thomas, and candidate for Murumba, Reg Gulley, announced that funding has been secured for a community project that involves designating a new police beat at Westfield North Lakes. The state LNP vouches for $300,000 in making the project a possibility.

The financial support parallels LNP’s bigger goal of promoting law and order across the state. In the announcement, Thomas has explained that while residents were primarily concern about the rising cost of living, crime is an equally important concern. She has shared that business owners, Westfield management, and the shoppers have positively welcomed the additional police beat.
Meanwhile, current Member for Murumba and ALP candidate for Bancroft, Chris Whiting, and ALP candidate for Murumba, Steven Miles, have further announced that the Palaszczuk Government will be designating 400 more police to the Mango Hill and North Lakes station.

Since becoming a suburb in 2006, North Lakes has continued to experience a flourishing commercial development and continued increase in population. The community has now become more diverse in culture and language. Both big and small businesses are being developed in the neighbourhood. It has also become an emerging lifestyle destination with different weekly events to enjoy.

Big commercial developments are attracted to the region. The number of supermarket and grocery stores have reached 271. There are also 256 cafes and restaurants at present. The Westfield Shopping complex, which opened in 2003, has more than 4,900 car parks and 80 specialty shops. It is also the location of both the only Costco and the second IKEA flagship store in Queensland.

The firms behind Fortitude Valley’s James Street and Southport’s Brickwork developments are also working on the Laguna North Lakes just opposite the Westfield. It is slated to become the retail and entertainment destination in the suburb. It is designed with an outdoor shopping precinct, alfresco restaurants, office spaces that are for lease, a lagoon style pool, aquatic facilities, and a hotel with 140 rooms.

Lifestyle destinations are booming in the suburb as well. The Fruit and Deli Co. will celebrate its second year at North Lakes Westfield in November.

The Hairhouse Warehouse, run by professionals in cutting, styling and caring for all types of hair, opens on 28 October.
There are currently 5,914 families in North Lakes, more than half of them with children. Family-friendly events are held regularly and enjoy a healthy attendance among the community.
Every first Thursday of the month, for instance, North Lakes Library welcomes kids, ages 9-12, to share and discuss books among themselves.
Families are welcome to attend a free CPR class every last Monday of every month.
Every Saturday in Caboolture Regional Art Gallery, children can learn traditional Chinese culture through workshops on lantern making, paper cutting, and Metaphysica collages.
Adult members of the families are treated to live music performances every Sunday afternoons at the North Lakes Resort and Golf Club.
On Monday and Friday mornings, with the exemption of public holidays, free specialist advice is given at Embrace Life’s Child Health Clinic.

All these are not surprising given the continued boom in the suburb. According to the recently released ABS Census, there are already 21,000 people in North Lakes at present. This is a 40 percent jump from the statistics back in 2011. The data also reflects a diverse background among North Lakes residents. The demographics indicate settlers from New Zealand, England, South Africa, India, and the Philippines. The most spoken language, aside from English, is Afrikaans, followed by Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish, and Tagalog.

Among the northern suburbs of Brisbane, North Lakes seems truly one of the places to be.
Environment Minister of Queensland Dr. Steven Miles stated that more than $300,000 will be provided to Clubs Queensland to begin with the project. Along with other clubs, North Lakes Sports Club will be segregating the food scraps that will be neatly placed in specially-designed containers.
The food scraps will be collected by JJ Richards, one of the largest waste management companies in Australia. The waste will be taken to a composting company, where they’ll convert the food scraps into organic compost and soil conditioner.

The converted waste will be delivered back to the clubs for their own use or will be provided to other local organisations. North Lakes Sports Club will be dedicating the organic compost to be primarily used at their three sports fields, which have been acquired on lease for the past three months.
FOGO project will be beneficial to both the environment and waste management. Continuous conversion of organic food scraps into compost will lead to the reduction of landfill.
Compost Gardening is the new trend in North Lakes.

Organic gardening is becoming popular in the North Lakes-Mango Hill area. Several neighbourhood have been converting their organic waste into compost that they use on their backyard gardens. Resident farmer Jody Wall has been growing organic produce for almost five years.
“There are no chemicals at all. As a small farmer I can make a good living doing things the way it was done before chemicals came on board. It is a travesty we have to have labels on organically-grown food when it is just grown naturally,” Mr. Wall said.
Mr. Wall is a member of Brisbane Organic Growers, a group that promotes organic gardening without using chemicals, hormones, or artificial herbicides and pesticides.
Using organic compost is recommended versus using chemical-based fertilizers due to its ability to prevent soil erosion and to eliminate toxins. Compost gardening can help in regenerating the soil through humus, the product of decomposing organic matter that is proven to be full of nutrients and minerals. Rich organic nutrients present in the compost will also help create healthier plants.
Another member of the group, gardening guru Phil Ryan, conducts workshops at libraries in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. Due to the ideal weather in North Lakes all year round, Mr. Ryan said that North Lakes is a good area for growing plants and encouraged residents to make a good soil compost, especially from vegetable scraps.

“People need to learn how to grow their own soil and make good compost … I put it all in a cement mixer for 20 minutes and out comes the best and richest soil you could ever get your hands into,” Mr. Ryan said.
The newly-opened Officeworks in North Lakes has been sold on a 10-year lease-back for $7.093 million, reflecting a record 4.8 percent yield. The sale is believed to be the new national benchmark yield for a freestanding Officeworks shop.
Officeworks , one of the leading retailers and suppliers of office products in Australia, recently opened their 165th store in North Lakes to the public last 30th of June and was officially launched on the 6th of July.
Strategic Location

The sale was closed to a private Melbourne-based investor that was represented by Joel Wald of MMJ Real Estate. Savills agents Peter Tyson and Jon Tyson facilitated the sale in behalf of Officeworks Limited.
The sale attracted more than 180 separate enquiries and multiple offers across Australia. Officeworks’ single tenant investment attribute sparked the hot sale competition.
“… New single tenant investments with long lease security and blue-chip covenants such as Officeworks are highly sought after by the marketplace due to their bond-like attributes,” Peter Tyson said.

Officework’s location in the North Lakes Business Park is viewed as strategic due to the rapid growth of the North Lakes area, something that has retailers lining up to be in the precinct. According to Mr. Tyson, the list of retailers includes Queensland’s Costco Wholesale outlet, Queensland’s biggest Bunnings Warehouse, and the IKEA store located near the Westfield Chermside. North Lakes is fast becoming a booming epicentre of urbanisation.
North Lakes as a Fast Growing Suburb in Queensland
According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), North Lakes is the fastest growing suburb in Queensland and the fourth in Australia, expanding by nearly 40 percent over the course of five years.
In recent years, North Lakes has seen several significant developments. Ever since Bunnings, Costco Warehouse, IKEA, and Westfield North Lakes began operating, the North Lakes Business Park has been a big source of jobs. Adding to the market is Officeworks that also opened its doors to employment this year.
These infrastructure developments appeal to many people. North Lakes’ location just 25 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD and excellent transport access make it a popular destination, with the suburb seeing a large number of centre visits each year.
North Lakes also has the highest number of house sales in the Brisbane region for the year to date, as Corelogic data shows. Home values have grown in the past five years with a median house price of $478,000.
It’s no surprise that North Lakes is enjoying dynamic growth. It seems that developers in the area make sure that there are enough developments every year to supply the needs of the growing suburb.
“… North Lakes is one of Australia’s largest and most successful master planned communities, and has become the epicentre of the high-growth urban corridor north of Brisbane,” Mr. Tyson said.

As if to drive home the point, Laguna North Lakes, a $250 million mixed-use development project, is expected to open in late 2017.
Westfield North Lakes transformed an area of the shopping centre into a realistic safari with life-sized animatronic jungle animals, such as lions, apes, and tigers. The animatronic jungle animals at Westfield North Lakes move and roar, just like real animals in the wild.
The safari can be explored at your own leisure or you can join the guided tour that leaves the Centre Court every 20 minutes. This can be a family activity that both the parents and the kids will enjoy. All kids should strictly be under the supervision of parents or guardians.
