The Petrie appearance is the final stop on Unitywater’s supplied schedule of 16 community events, with the other remaining visit scheduled for the STEPS Autism Treehouse Christmas Party at STEPS Caloundra on Sunday 25 October. The mobile service encourages people to bring reusable water bottles rather than rely on single-use plastic bottles while attending community gatherings.
Water Refills at Moreton Bay EcoFest

Festivalgoers attending the Petrie event can bring their own bottles and refill them at the Drink Tap van without charge. Unitywater uses the vehicle at community, sporting and lifestyle events to promote tap water as an alternative to commercially bottled water.
The van’s scheduled appearance at UniSC Moreton Bay follows a series of visits across the utility’s service region, which includes Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa. Its participation in EcoFest will give attendees another opportunity to refill their bottles while away from home.
Unitywater said its Drink Tap van attended 58 local events over an 18-month period, helping avoid the equivalent of more than 120,000 single-use plastic water bottles. The figure is reported by the utility as part of its efforts to reduce disposable plastic consumption at community events.
Tap Water Costs and Plastic Waste
Unitywater Executive Manager Strategic Engagement Joshua Zugajev has urged residents to carry reusable bottles and refill them with tap water where drinking-water facilities are available. He has identified both cost savings and reduced plastic waste as reasons to make the switch.
According to Unitywater, an average litre of bottled water costs about $4, compared with a similar amount for approximately 1,000 litres of tap water. The comparison relates to the cost of water and does not account for the purchase of a reusable bottle or other household expenses.
Plastic waste is another focus of the campaign, particularly the potential for discarded bottles to enter landfill or waterways. Unitywater’s message centres on reducing the need for disposable containers through regular refilling.
The initiative has also received support from Sunshine Coast Lightning, a longstanding Unitywater partner. Lightning shooter Cara Koenen has encouraged people to carry reusable bottles when leaving home, describing preparation as an important habit both in sport and everyday activities.
Community Events and Future Enquiries
Although the supplied event schedule concludes at Petrie on 7 November, community organisations can still enquire about hosting the Drink Tap van at future gatherings. Unitywater directs sporting clubs, community groups and lifestyle event organisers to its Drink Tap program for information about requesting the service.
