Dakabin to House Key Wildlife Hospital, Koala Protection Funding Urgently Needed

An urgent request for $50 million in funding commitment over the next three years has been made to address the dwindling koala population. This includes plans for a $3-million, 3-hectare site in Dakabin for the construction of the much-needed Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital.

This facility is expected to significantly improve wildlife survival rates by reducing transport times for injured animals facing journeys of up to two hours to reach emergency care.  The hospital will also alleviate pressure on dedicated wildlife carers and existing veterinary facilities.

This call to action comes as concern grows over the declining numbers of the koala population.

The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) spearheads the push, advocating for financial support to implement koala threat mitigation strategies and manage urban flying fox populations.

The LGAQ emphasises local governments’ crucial role in pinpointing koala habitats and coordinating conservation efforts, particularly within the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-2025 framework.

Many local governments already have active koala conservation programmes, often collaborating with community groups and researchers to better understand and protect local koala populations.

However, consistent, dedicated funding for these initiatives has been lacking. The LGAQ argues that secure funding would enable governments to effectively plan and execute local strategies to ensure the survival of koalas.

Mr Peter Flannery highlighted the City of Moreton Bay’s dedication to safeguarding the local environment for native wildlife.  He expressed pride in the region’s healthy urban koala numbers but acknowledged the need for continued action.

Mr Flannery welcomed the recent funding pledges for the hospital and urged other political candidates to follow suit. He stressed the importance of support from all levels of government to bring this vital project to fruition.

In addition to the wildlife hospital, the City of Moreton Bay is actively involved in various conservation efforts. These include habitat tree planting, a Green Infrastructure Programme to construct wildlife crossings and protective fencing, and a Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes programme.

Ms Karen Williams echoed the sentiment, underscoring the significance of koalas to Queensland.  With Redland City home to a substantial Koala population, Mr Williams emphasised the need for ongoing funding to protect this national symbol.

Redland City has implemented a comprehensive programme encompassing population monitoring, habitat protection, disease intervention, and community education. However, like Moreton Bay, it requires further assistance from Queensland to ensure the long-term survival of koalas.

The plea for funding reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need for collaborative action to protect Koalas. With habitat loss, vehicle strikes, and disease posing significant threats,  securing the necessary resources is critical to the survival of these iconic creatures.

Rothwell Welcomes New Homemaker Centre After Approval

Following the approval of construction plans, a new homemaker centre on a prominent 3.7-hectare site on Anzac Avenue is set to revitalise the retail scene in Rothwell.

The development, brought forward by Norhart Developments, will introduce an expansive 8539 sqm showroom, a service station, and nine tenancies ranging in size from 238 sqm to 1967 sqm.

Two drive-through restaurants and a 2500 sq m storage warehouse will be part of the development, which Norhart Developments is in charge of. Ample parking will be provided, with 365 spaces planned for the site, which boasts a 122-metre frontage onto both Anzac Ave and Buchanan St.

The plans carefully consider traffic flow. They incorporate a U-turn bay on Anzac Ave and a future connection to the Leisel Jones Dr roundabout adjacent to Bunnings. This connectivity aims to ensure smooth traffic movement within the area and accommodate the anticipated increase in vehicle activity.

The project has been met with mixed reactions from the community. While acknowledging the potential economic benefits of the development, some residents have voiced concerns about adding another service station to the area. Councillor Sandra Ruck, representing Division 5, addressed these concerns, stating that the development aligns with the town plan and must be accepted based on existing service stations.

The construction will be rolled out in two stages. The initial phase will focus on the homemaker tenancies, service stations, food outlets, and car parking. The warehouse construction will follow in the subsequent stage.  This phased approach is expected to minimise disruption to the surrounding area and allow for a more manageable construction process.

With its diverse retail offerings and convenient location, the new homemaker centre is anticipated to become a hub for shoppers and a significant contributor to the local economy.

Vet Nurse from Petrie Issues Warning Over Pet Microchip Scam

Pet owners are urged to remain cautious following warnings from Petrie vet nurse Tabatha Whitehead, who has confirmed that microchips are registered for a pet’s lifetime and should not require renewal.

Whitehead, a local vet nurse at Pet Care Hub, highlighted concerns after a wave of scam emails circulated among Queenslanders, falsely claiming that pet owners needed to renew their animal’s microchip registration. She urged pet owners to know that microchips do not expire and emphasised the importance of reporting such scams to their vet immediately if they receive a suspicious email.

Growing Concern in Queensland

The scam, which has sparked concern across Queensland, involves emails designed to trick pet owners into paying for unnecessary microchip renewal. According to Queensland Police, the fraudulent messages often use convincing language and pressure tactics, making recipients believe their pet’s safety could be at risk if they fail to act quickly.

Police have advised that these emails frequently use the names of well-known microchip companies, asking recipients to update their contact details and pay through a provided link. However, authorities and veterinary professionals, including Whitehead, have confirmed that microchips are permanent and do not require renewal payment.

Scammers tend to create a false sense of urgency to exploit pet owners.

“The Financial and Cyber Crime Group urges Queenslanders to always verify the authenticity of any request for payment, especially when it involves personal information or financial transactions,” the QPS spokesperson said.

How to Stay Protected

Authorities recommend that pet owners stay alert for any emails or text messages asking for personal or payment details, especially if the requests seem urgent or unfamiliar. Scamwatch has also advised the public to avoid clicking on links from suspicious sources and to verify any claims by contacting the relevant company directly.

The RSPCA also confirmed that microchipping is a permanent form of electronic identification, and owners only need to ensure their contact information is current in case address or phone number changes.

Other designated collection points include Capalaba, Gold Coast, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, and Townsville, with plans to expand to more locations in the future. The program’s official launch took place in Redlands in August 2024.

This pioneering effort seeks to improve the renewable energy industry’s engagement with communities while establishing a comprehensive system for solar panel recycling throughout the state. The initiative will explore the feasibility of collecting, reusing, and recycling solar panels from various sources, including residential, commercial, and solar farm installations.

Funded by nearly $5.5 million by Queensland’s Recycling and Jobs Fund and the Queensland Renewable Energy Industry Association Grant, the program will conduct a pilot study to gather valuable information. This data will help inform the development of a broader solar panel stewardship scheme, benefiting both small and large-scale installations.

John Grimes, Chief Executive of the Smart Energy Council, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact: “The Queensland Solar Stewardship Scheme has already triggered massive growth of investment in the recovery and recycling of solar panels. More than five recycling companies have already indicated they’ll be entering the market in Queensland.”

Mr Grimes emphasised the importance of this initiative for the future of renewable energy: “The recycling ecosystem is a critical part of securing the renewable energy transition into the future and provides insurance against future material limits like copper and silver.”

This forward-thinking program positions Queensland at the forefront of renewable energy recycling, potentially serving as a model for similar initiatives across the country. As the solar industry continues to grow, responsible end-of-life management for panels becomes increasingly crucial for long-term sustainability.

Starlight Wishes Do Come True

For Anabela, one of the most exciting things about living in a house for the first time is going to the letterbox at the end of the garden to check for mail!

Despite living with a series of complex medical conditions, the six-year-old always finds the positive side of life. Shortly after she was born, Anabela was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, Complex VACTERL Association, Tethered Cord Syndrome, and Scoliosis, alongside several other conditions.

Anabela also lives with Microtia Atresia Grade 3, which means she does not have an outer right ear or an ear canal, causing conductive hearing loss. She also has Hemifacial Microsomia, a condition where one side of her face is underdeveloped. Since birth, she has undergone over 35 general anesthetics and made more than 400 trips to the hospital.

Despite her challenges, Anabela’s positivity shines through. One of her biggest dreams came true when she received her very own cubby house as her Starlight Wish. Captain Starlight, a beloved character for children in hospitals, was there to cheer her on as she explored her new cubby, complete with a kitchen, toys, and even her very own mailbox—fulfilling her dream of checking the mail in her garden!

“It means the world to Anabela to have a space to call her own. It’s going to mean many happy birthdays and many hours happily playing with her friends after school,” said her mother, Sarah. “I’m so humbled by the generosity of so many people making this happen for us.”

A Best Friend for Life

Five-year-old Hunter loves spending time at the dog park, patting all the dogs. So when he lost interest in going to the park and became fatigued, his parents were understandably concerned.

After several doctor visits and a late-night trip to the hospital, their lives were turned upside down—Hunter was diagnosed with Leukemia and he had to undergo chemotherapy.

During his long hospital stays, one bright spot was the visits from Captain Starlight. The jokes and playful interaction provided moments of joy, distracting Hunter from the tough treatments.

Despite the challenges, one piece of good news brought hope to Hunter—a Starlight Wish. His wish was simple: a Dalmatian puppy, inspired by his favorite movie 101 Dalmatians that he watched repeatedly in the hospital. The family chose a sweet Dalmatian named Rocky, who quickly became Hunter’s best friend.

“Starlight has brought our family so much joy,” Bridie shared. “I’m so thankful to the supporters who make this happiness possible. I can’t imagine how we would have got through all of this without Starlight being there.”

Hunter now has Rocky by his side, a loyal companion who brings light and happiness into his life. Rocky has given Hunter something to look forward to, a reminder of the joy that dogs have always brought him.

New $6-million Operations Centre Planned for Deception Bay Emergency Service Unit

Plans have been releasedf for a new $6-million State Emergency Service (SES) Depot and Emergency Operations Centre in Deception Bay. Considered one of Brisbane’s top-performing SES units, it has been forced to operate from what local officials describe as a “poor quality shed” despite its award-winning status.

Read: Equipping Deception Bay Youth for Success: A Community Grant in Action

The SES Depot is expected to support the rapidly growing region. The current facility, a community-built structure on Old Bay Road dating back to 1985, is struggling with storage issues, recruitment constraints, and outdated facilities that no longer meet operational or training demands.

The proposed redevelopment aims to transform the depot into a state-of-the-art facility, including:

  • A modern, purpose-built training facility for high-risk activities
  • A 9-bay vehicle garage with three double-depth drive-through bays
  • A new shared expanded carpark with the Dragons Football Club
  • Accommodation and support services

Local official Peter Flannery highlighted the disparity between the unit’s performance and its working conditions. “The Deception Bay SES Group is in the top two percent of busiest SES groups in Queensland and the City has had a 182 percent increase in SES service requests over the year, yet they are working from a poor quality shed,”he stated.

The Deception Bay unit’s accolades include the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup for SES Unit of the Year, recognising their work during the 2022 floods and support in missing persons searches. This week, the broader Moreton Bay SES Group won the 2024 Unit/Group of the Year at the SES Week State Award Ceremony.

Despite these achievements, funding remains a challenge. The City of Moreton Bay has allocated $3.75 million to the redevelopment in the 2024-25 budget and committed over $300,000 in design and development costs. However, the State government has not agreed to match the funding on a 50/50 basis.

“The team are doing extraordinary things, but capital funding investment by the State is needed so they can continue to ably support our community.

“As we move into severe weather season, and on the back of climate change and the relentless pace of emergencies and disasters, such as the severe flooding and storm events we experienced earlier in the year, this is now desperate,” he also emphasised.

The Deception Bay SES Group, part of the larger Moreton Bay SES Group with over 270 volunteers, responded to more than 250 direct requests for assistance in their primary area last year. They also handled over 500 requests during three large-scale weather events across Moreton Bay.

As plans for the new Operations Centre await full funding, the Deception Bay SES unit continues to serve from its ageing facility, underscoring the urgent need for infrastructure investment in critical emergency services.

Pokemon Go Resurgence Brings Crowds Back to Deception Bay

The skatepark in Deception Bay has become a hotspot for dozens of Pokémon GO players who gather every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to defeat raid bosses, signalling a resurgence of the popular mobile game in South East Queensland.

A New Wave of Players in Deception Bay

Eight years after its 2016 launch, Pokémon GO is regaining popularity in Queensland, particularly in areas like Deception Bay and the Redcliffe peninsula.

Local players, many of whom have been part of the community since day one, spend hours building and maintaining local Pokémon GO hubs. These hubs are often tied to real-world landmarks, with every mural, plaque, and even cafes in the area offering potential Pokémon-catching opportunities.

Brisbane-based player Stephen Eisenhauer, a community ambassador for Pokémon GO, said the game’s ability to evolve with new events and features constantly has kept long-term players engaged. He explained that while local sites may not have hosted the major international events, the community of enthusiasts has been steadily growing, with more players joining every month. There are over 840 members in the community group in Deception Bay, according to one player.

Some 10 kilometeres from Deception Bay, players from across South East Queensland frequently point to Redcliffe as one of the best places to play Pokémon GO. The Redcliffe peninsula offers around 140 Pokémon GO gyms within its 38 square kilometre boundary, making it a prime spot for collaborative gameplay. Redcliffe’s layout, with its well-spaced points of interest and beachfront access, adds to its appeal.

Building a Stronger Community

The dedicated local community is a big part of Pokémon GO’s resurgence in Queensland. Players have taken advantage of the Niantic Wayfarer website to submit new points of interest for the game, contributing to the region’s growing number of locations for catching Pokémon. Eisenhauer and other community leaders are working on growing this network further. Niantic, the game’s developer, still recognises Brisbane’s enthusiasm and may bring an official event to the region in the future.

Dakabin Bakes for a Cause: RSPCA’s Cupcake Day Returns

Moreton Bay residents are being called upon to fire up their ovens and whip up a storm of cupcakes this September in support of the RSPCA’s yearly Cupcake Day fundraiser in Dakabin.

Held annually, Cupcake Day provides a delightful excuse to rally friends, family, or colleagues at home, school, or work and bake to combat animal cruelty.

Dakabin’s Mini Market

The dedicated team and volunteers from RSPCA Dakabin will join the Cupcake Day festivities, hosting a mini market on 14 September. This event will showcase various delectable baked goods, a second-hand market, raffles, and other exciting activities, all supporting animal welfare.

Every Dollar Makes a Difference

For those unable to attend the mini-market, online donations are warmly welcomed. Every dollar counts, with donations ranging from providing a warm bed and care for a shelter animal to cover the cost of antibiotics for an animal recovering from surgery, transporting animals to shelters with higher adoption rates, or desexing a kitten to help manage the stray population.

Elsewhere, various activities will take place across the South East Queensland.

Get Involved in Five Easy Steps

There are five straightforward steps: signing up, planning the event with the host tools, promoting the paw-ty, preparing the ingredients, and finally, hosting the party to raise funds.

Every Cupcake Counts

She admired the animal lovers who channel their creativity into fundraising efforts, providing crucial support to the countless animals in RSPCA’s care.

Bruno’s Story: A Cupcake Day Success

Last year alone, over 87,000 animals sought assistance from the RSPCA, including 42,949 in Queensland. Funds raised from Cupcake Day will be instrumental in aiding animals like Bruno, one of ten puppies abandoned at a Moreton Bay property.

Sadly, two of the puppies succumbed to untreated health issues, but thanks to the tireless efforts of RSPCA staff and volunteers, eight puppies, including Bruno, found loving homes forever, thanks to the generosity of Cupcake Day fundraisers.

So, roll up your sleeves, preheat your ovens, and join the fight against animal cruelty this Cupcake Day!
