In early September 2022, Scented by Harry’s owner, Harry Scott-Rothera, opened The Candle Lab at his gorgeous workshop located upstairs of the Simply Kate Headquarters in North Lakes.

A Candle Lab experience will take participants into a 2-hour candle-making session and get to take their very own candle creation home.

As participants wait for their candle to set, which takes about 30 minutes, they can take the time to decorate their creation with dried flowers and crystals whilst talking to friends and enjoying a sip of wine and food whilst the music plays in the background.

Each session at The Candle Lab could cater to about ten to 16 people for $99 per participant. A class includes all materials needed for the candle-making process, a 60-hour candle to take home, a welcome beverage and snacks, an option to make a second candle for $20 and a 20 per cent off on Scented by Harry creations. BYO drinks option is also available.

If you are looking for a great venue for your upcoming event, Candle Lab is also available to book for private events including birthday parties, company events and family gatherings. Booking the venue for your private event already includes the candle experience for all your guests.

The Candle Lab is located at SSKHQ, 3/9 Flinders Parade, North Lakes 4509.

Expansion of Mango Hill Station Park ‘N’ Ride Facilities Now Underway

The expansion of the park ‘n’ ride facilities at Mango Hill station is now underway and the current parking capacity is expected to more than double, once works are completed in 2023.

Read: Plans Finalised for $10-Million Mango Hill Station Upgrades

The expansion will add 280 extra car parking spaces to the existing 220 car parking spaces in the facility, providing a total of 500 parking spaces on two separate sites upon completion.

The current works are part of the $10-million upgrade of Mango Hill train station, which aims not just to add parking spaces to increase public transport access in the surrounding suburbs, but also to manage parking pressures at nearby stations and local streets.

Aside from the expansion of the facility, works include lighting and CCTV cameras for enhanced visibility and security, landscaping to provide visual amenities, and pedestrian paths to improve connectivity to and from the train station.

It will also feature six accessible parking bays near the train station to improve access to public transport for customers with a disability, as well as access to a relocated kiss ‘n’ ride/taxi zone with the bus facility on Meyers Circuit.

The relocated bus stop will maintain its existing length to cater for four 12.5m-long buses, which will make it safer and more efficient for passenger drop offs.

Following site establishment works, the main construction works for the upgrade started in June 2022.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey and Deputy Premier Steven Miles announced that the new facility would open to the public in mid-2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.

New Masterplanned Community North Of Narangba Aims For 6-star Green Star Rating

Kinma Valley, Moreton Bay’s newest masterplanned community, is aiming for a six-star Green Star rating with more than 30 percent of the project to be dedicated to open space.

Read: 2032 Olympics Update: What To Expect At Petrie’s Olympic Park

A project of Lendlease, the upcoming $500 million community targets the highest green star rating by incorporating green surroundings with sustainable innovations and conserving flora and fauna in the region.

“We will focus on recycling in the construction of Kinma Valley. Mature trees will be relocated, where possible, to provide shade along the streetscapes while facilitating a tailored approach to managing local waterways, which treat stormwater naturally while adding to the area’s beauty,” Lendlease said.

To ensure that the masterplan respects the habitats of native wildlife and provides environments for them to thrive, developers have also worked with ecologists, environmental consultants and leading koala experts.

Green Star communities provide a rigorous and holistic rating across five impact categories–governance, liveability, economic prosperity, environment, and innovation.

Masterplan

The 234ha site will feature a total of 2,500 lots and is set to be home to over 6,500 residents upon completion, which is estimated to be after 10 to 15 years.

Situated in Narangba within the Moreton Bay region, the new community will have six existing local schools which will support the area, 6km of cycle/pedestrian trails, and a 31-ha central park.

Developers will be repurposing a large house on site which will become the Neighbourhood Hub.

Designed by Brisbane-based Vokes and Peters, the 3,000sqm neighbourhood hub will be a place for locals to catch up, have a coffee, and enjoy the connected environment in which they live.

According to Lendlease, early buyers included everyone from young families and first home buyers to empty nesters and retirees. Many of the first residents were actually single females attracted by affordability and the chance to get a foot on the home ownership ladder.

Award-winning Moreton Bay Artwork Mistaken for Paper Towels By Guest

Prominent Brisbane artist Dr Karike Ashworth has won the Moreton Bay Region Art Prize and $5,000 for her art installation, ‘Viva!’ However, the decision to place a hand sanitiser for public use quite near the display of the paper towel art piece at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery in Strathpine nearly proved to be its undoing!

Dr Ashworth’s Viva! features a carefully hand-sewn single and unbroken line of white thread, creating 60 sheets that are attached and mounted on a 1970s-style paper towel holder. She described her work as a commentary on the “matrilineality of care labour” as she took  “approximately 30 unpaid hours” to craft the winning piece.

The artist explained her motivation for the paper towel installation.

“My practice often oscillates between employing the hyper-spectacle as a subversive strategy, and using banal, uninteresting, even typically ‘unspectacular’ materials. Sometimes both at the same time,” she said. “In my latest series of works I am using toilet paper and paper towel products and making objects and installations which are seemingly understated.”

Oops!

The exhibition’s June 2022 presentation caused quite a stir, though not quite in the way everyone hoped. A patron mistakenly tore off two sheets from Viva! and used the sheets as hand wipes, after using some hand sanitiser that was placed near the art installation.

Pine Rivers Art Gallery had to put up a sign indicating that the original artwork was compromised and displayed then the torn sheets as well, to illustrate what happened.

“The incident has given us all pause to reflect on the way the pandemic has infiltrated our daily hygiene practices,” the sign stated. “It is also a stark reminder that the use of “found objects” and/or the “readymade ” in art — a practice which began upwards 100 years ago — continues to surprise and confound us.”

Judge’s Notes on Viva!

Rachel Arndt, the curator of The Condensery in Toogoolawah, who was the judge of the Moreton Bay Region Art Prize, said Dr Ashworth’s work may be easily dismissed as “an ugly utilitarian object” but a closer inspection will reveal the delicate embroidery.

“It hits you then – the stitching stretches the entire length of the roll, metres and metres of paper towel lovingly sewn and re-rolled into seeming ubiquitous usefulness.”

The judge liked that the art piece shows how “the disposable is actually priceless,”, especially during the pandemic.

Dr Ashworth is a graduate of Queensland College of Art and has a Ph.D. in fine arts at the Queensland University of Technology. When she’s not creating art, she works for Public Galleries Queensland.

The  Moreton Bay Region Art Prize had almost 200 entries this year, impressing Mayor Peter Flannery with the quality of entries received.

“Art has a great ability to tap into the mindset of the community, and these unique, often unconventional exhibits certainly reflect themes we at Council know are very important to our Moreton Bay community such as responsible waste management, the value of work, our identity, protecting the environment and sustainability,” the mayor said

2032 Olympics Update: What To Expect At Petrie’s Olympic Park

Moreton Bay will have its very own Olympic Park at The Mill, Petrie with a purpose-built indoor stadium boasting at least 7,000 seats to host all Olympic boxing events in 2032.

Whilst the designs are not yet finalised, it’s previously announced that the venue will have nine multi-use courts that will be used not only for accommodating high-level sports competition but also for hosting community events post-Olympics.

Mayor Peter  Flannery announced that beyond the 2032 Olympics, the facility will be used for hosting major sporting events, concerts, and events for generations to come so that the “Olympic spirit lives on forever in Moreton Bay.”

The Mill at Moreton Bay, located at Moreton Parade, is a 65ha mixed-use space owned by Moreton Bay Regional Council. In 2016, The Mill was declared a Priority Development Area to help fast-track development.

The site was the former location of the Petrie Paper Mill, which operated from 1957 to 2013.  Council purchased the land back in 2015.

It’s now home to the USC Moreton Bay, which opened in February 2020 and a multi-million water park which opened to the public in 2021.

“It will become a cultural hub for the region and will support community events like concerts, festivals, art performances, school activities and more,” Mayor Flannery said.

The Olympic Park at The Mill will be one of the new venues to be built for the 2032 event. Most of the other venues in Brisbane and Greater Brisbane are existing venues or updated forms of existing venues.

“The lasting economic benefits will be huge too with the capabilities to host exhibitions, business conferences and events, trade shows, work spaces and even potentially be used for filming opportunities like television commercials.”

The Olympics announcement is anticipated to be the catalyst for new supporting infrastructure like roads and public transport to support population demands.

“It’s a long way off but our Olympics journey begins now and I’m excited to see what it brings to the people of Moreton Bay over the coming years,” Mayor Flannery said.

Future Uncertain For Former North Lakes Golf Course

Despite years of dispute with some locals, the current owners of the former North Lakes golf course have officially lodged their plans to transform the site into a retirement village and aged care home.

Read: Major Development! North Lakes Eco-Lifestyle Precinct Proposed in Mango Hill

Planning documents submitted to the Moreton Bay Regional Council in October 2021 revealed JH Northlakes Pty Ltd is seeking to build a low-rise building with up to 250 units, designed for independent living and a single-storey complex for aged care facility with 120 beds on the site.

Once approved, the golf course will be repurposed to accommodate the facilities associated with the retirement village. This includes dining spaces, function rooms, health facilities, a swimming pool, gym and an outdoor bowling green.

Around 82 per cent of the 67-ha lot will be used for open space whilst both the retirement facility and residential care facility will only take up 18 percent of the total area combined.

The closure of the golf course back in 2019 came with controversy, with some locals protesting its sale and the developers’ plans for a retirement village. A group of locals even formed the Save North Lakes Golf Course group to save the golf course.

The Moreton Bay Regional Council sought the help of an independent barrister and learned that the developer cannot lawfully proceed in its current form.

“This decision is only to decide if the developer can lodge its current DA according to law, not to assess or approve any aspect of the proposed development. We are of course hopeful the court will agree with MBRC’s position and conclude that the current DA cannot be lodged,” Save North Lakes Golf Course has stated in a Facebook post.

The community group added that they will continue to work hard as it is critical to ensure they keep the golf course that runs through the centre of North Lakes from being rezoned and re-purposed to retirement and aged care units.

To track the status of the application, visit the MBRC’s DA Tracker with the reference DA/2021/4205.

Mango Hill Park ‘N’ Ride Upgrade Scheduled To Commence Soon

Construction tenders are now being accepted for upgrades to the Mango Hill station park n’ ride. Work is expected to commence in mid-2022 and will take about 12 months to complete.

The new park n’ ride facility will provide about 280 new parking spaces which will double the capacity at the Mango Hill station which now has 220 existing car parking spaces.

The project is part of a $160 million park n’ ride upgrade program by the State. The upgrade will also provide a relocated kiss n’ ride, taxi zone, and a bus facility which will allow for safer and more efficient passenger drop-offs. Accessible parking bays near the Mango Hill station will also increase.

Key features of the upgrade include:

  • Adding 280 extra parking spaces to the existing 220 parking spaces.
  • Lighting and CCTV cameras for enhanced visibility and security.
  • Landscaping to provide visual amenity.
  • Pedestrian paths to improve connectivity to and from the train station.
  • 6 accessible parking bays near the Mango Hill train station to improve access to public transport for customers with a disability.
  • Relocated kiss ‘n’ ride/taxi zone and bus facility to make it safer and more efficient for passenger drop-offs.

Construction is slated to commence in mid-2022 and will take about 12 months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. The majority of the work will be undertaken between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.

The $10-million project is jointly funded by the Australian ($4 million through its Urban Congestion Fund) and Queensland ($6 million) governments.

Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP confirmed that procurement of a construction contract for the upgrade project has commenced following the completion of the park n’ ride upgrade project design.

“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 185 packages of work nationwide. The total number of projects that are now completed or underway nationwide is 81. By the end of 2022, more than 80 per cent of all packages are expected to be completed or under construction” Minister Fletcher said, who also noted that this is part of a $110-billion infrastructure investment pipeline which is helping to drive Australia’s economic recovery.

Queensland Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles said that the upgrade will also provide a relocated kiss n’ ride, taxi zone and bus facility which will allow for safer and more efficient passenger drop-offs. He added that the accessible parking bays near the Mango Hill station will also increase.

“This follows the successful opening of park ‘n’ ride spaces across the SEQ rail network at locations like Geebung, Carseldine and Virginia on Brisbane’s northside,” Mr Miles said.

“As more and more people choose to call Queensland home, it’s infrastructure like this that will make a real difference in the everyday lives of commuters on the northside,” he added.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said that 3,200 new park n’ ride spaces will be built over the next four years under the $160 million Upgrade Program which will add to the existing 32,600 plus spaces.
