Car Rollover in North Lakes Leaves Driver Critical, Children Injured

In a harrowing incident on Friday afternoon, 6 December 2024, a car rollover on the Anzac Avenue off-ramp in North Lakes has left a male driver fighting for his life and three young children hospitalised.

The accident occurred around 4:00 PM, with emergency services responding quickly to the scene. According to Queensland Ambulance Service reports, the driver was initially trapped in the wreckage, adding a critical dimension to the already serious accident.

Paramedics worked diligently to extricate the driver, who was subsequently treated for what are described as potentially life-threatening injuries. He was then urgently transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, underscoring the severity of his condition.

The incident’s impact on the children involved was less severe. Three children, all under 10 years old, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Queensland Children’s Hospital. Ambulance sources confirmed the children were in a stable condition, providing a measure of relief amid the traumatic circumstances.

North Lakes residents are advised that the Anzac Avenue off-ramp was likely temporarily closed during the emergency response and subsequent investigation. Local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the rollover.

Community Outrage as Teen Walks Free After North Lakes Home Invasion

The North Lakes community has expressed deep frustration and anger after a teenager involved in the home invasion that led to the fatal stabbing of mother-of-two Emma Lovell was released after serving less than two years in custody.

Outcry Over Sentencing

Residents of North Lakes and advocates for victims’ rights have condemned the justice system after the 19-year-old offender, who was involved in the December 2022 home invasion at the Lovell home, walked free this week. Despite his role in the incident that left Emma dead, the teen was sentenced to just 18 months’ detention, with time served in pre-sentence custody allowing his immediate release.

Advocate Julie West called the sentencing “heartbreaking” and “disappointing,” arguing that Queensland’s youth crime laws continue to fail victims and their families. Queensland Attorney-General Deb Frecklington also criticised the outcome, acknowledging that it does not meet community expectations and promising to explore legal options to appeal.

The Tragic Events at North Lakes

The fatal incident occurred on Boxing Day in 2022, when two teens entered the Lovell home in North Lakes. Emma Lovell and her husband, Lee, confronted the intruders, leading to a struggle that spilled onto the front lawn. During the altercation, one of the teens fatally stabbed Mrs Lovell. The primary offender was sentenced to 14 years in prison but is appealing his conviction.

The second teen, who did not wield the knife, was found guilty of burglary and assault but acquitted of murder and manslaughter. His lawyers successfully argued that he was unaware of his co-offender’s intentions to use a weapon.

Community Fears and Victim Impact

Lee shared his ongoing fears for his family’s safety, describing the devastating emotional toll of losing his wife and the ongoing trauma caused by the home invasion. He said the sentencing had left him disillusioned with the justice system and worried that criminals could once again target his home.

The court heard that the released teen had an extensive history of offending, with over 100 prior charges ranging from property theft to violent robberies. Despite this, he was not declared a serious repeat offender, as he is no longer a minor.

Justice Michael Copley acknowledged the teen’s disadvantaged upbringing, including exposure to domestic violence and substance abuse, but emphasised that these factors did not excuse his behaviour. However, his release has fuelled fears among North Lakes residents, who are calling for tougher laws to protect the community.

Renewed Push for Reform

The case has reignited calls for stricter youth crime legislation in Queensland. A local pointed to the Lovell case as a clear example of why reforms such as the Making Queensland Safer laws are needed. These laws propose harsher penalties for serious youth offenders, aligning with widespread public sentiment that current measures are insufficient.

For North Lakes residents, the case is not just about law reform but about regaining a sense of safety in their community. Another resident, who has long advocated for victims’ rights, said more needs to be done to ensure that families like the Lovells receive the justice they deserve.

From $16M to $114M: North Lakes Industrial Site’s Dramatic Value Leap

A North Lakes industrial site has sold for $114 million, marking a dramatic value increase from its $16 million purchase price in 2021. The sale highlights the remarkable growth in the city’s outer northern suburbs’ industrial land values, which have more than doubled over the past three years.

The 25-hectare site at 109-135 Boundary Road was purchased by logistics giant ESR from Garda Property Group, which had secured development approval in 2022 for a 100,000-square-metre industrial estate.

As part of the sale agreement, Garda will invest an additional $11.2 million to complete remaining civil works, intersection improvements, and road construction. The property group had already initiated earthworks and begun civil development before the sale.

For this project, Garda expected construction to commence early 2023 and completed by 2024. However, rising construction costs have prompted the real estate group to focus more on buying existing assets, despite maintaining its strategy of developing and holding industrial properties.

ESR Australia and New Zealand CEO Phil Pearce said the acquisition would allow the company to expand its presence in Brisbane’s supply-constrained market, which is benefiting from strong population growth in South East Queensland.

“North Lakes is perfectly positioned to provide seamless connectivity to major business centres and national road, air and rail networks. Situated alongside the Bruce Highway / M1 and near the Gateway Motorway, the subject site sits 32km north of Brisbane’s CBD, 40 minutes drive from the Sunshine Coast and only 22 minutes from both Brisbane domestic and international airports,” Garda stated in its website.

The logistics company has announced plans to transform the North Lakes site into a premium industrial estate, continuing the original vision for a master-planned development that would accommodate businesses of varying sizes.

This transaction highlights the robust demand for industrial land in Brisbane’s northern corridor and demonstrates the significant value appreciation in the region’s industrial property sector.

Following the approval of construction plans, a new homemaker centre on a prominent 3.7-hectare site on Anzac Avenue is set to revitalise the retail scene in Rothwell.

The development, brought forward by Norhart Developments, will introduce an expansive 8539 sqm showroom, a service station, and nine tenancies ranging in size from 238 sqm to 1967 sqm.

Two drive-through restaurants and a 2500 sq m storage warehouse will be part of the development, which Norhart Developments is in charge of. Ample parking will be provided, with 365 spaces planned for the site, which boasts a 122-metre frontage onto both Anzac Ave and Buchanan St.

The plans carefully consider traffic flow. They incorporate a U-turn bay on Anzac Ave and a future connection to the Leisel Jones Dr roundabout adjacent to Bunnings. This connectivity aims to ensure smooth traffic movement within the area and accommodate the anticipated increase in vehicle activity.

The project has been met with mixed reactions from the community. While acknowledging the potential economic benefits of the development, some residents have voiced concerns about adding another service station to the area. Councillor Sandra Ruck, representing Division 5, addressed these concerns, stating that the development aligns with the town plan and must be accepted based on existing service stations.

The construction will be rolled out in two stages. The initial phase will focus on the homemaker tenancies, service stations, food outlets, and car parking. The warehouse construction will follow in the subsequent stage.  This phased approach is expected to minimise disruption to the surrounding area and allow for a more manageable construction process.

With its diverse retail offerings and convenient location, the new homemaker centre is anticipated to become a hub for shoppers and a significant contributor to the local economy.

North Lakes Community Shocked by Another Brazen Break-in Next to Murdered Mum’s Home

The house adjacent to where Emma Lovell was brutally murdered on Boxing Day 2022 has been invaded by a group of masked youths in North Lakes.

Late Thursday evening, 22 August, masked intruders were captured on CCTV forcefully entering the home right next to where the tragic incident involving Emma occurred less than two years ago. The distressing footage revealed several young offenders at the scene, though it remains unclear if they managed to steal anything.

Resident Sarah Brown expressed her dismay and anger over the incident, highlighting the youths’ audacity in targeting their community. Lee Lovell, Emma’s widower, shared his disbelief that such an event could recur so near their home, noting it brought back harrowing memories and fears. He reflected on his response to such threats and the perpetual caution that now marks his daily life.

The intrusion has had a strong impact on the community, with neighbors and locals clearly showing significant discomfort. There is a tangible sense of fear that their homes might be targeted next, or even worse, that their families could be directly endangered.

Lee voiced his frustration over the current youth crime measures, suggesting that the system’s leniency only perpetuates the cycle of crime. He advocated for more vital legislation to deter young offenders effectively, pointing out the frequent and seemingly consequence-free nature of youth offenses.

The local police have intensified their efforts in response to the break-in, investigating whether this incident is connected to other recent crimes in the area.

There have been multiple attempts by groups of youths to break into properties in North Lakes and the nearby Mango Hill area. Detectives are also considering links to other aggressive break-ins across Brisbane, including a violent home invasion in Bridgeman Downs where suspects brandished a mallet and a butcher’s knife.

The announcement came this week via a heartfelt social media post from owner-operators Kylie and Craig Oldfield, who expressed gratitude for the community’s support over the past seven years.

The Oldfields’ decision to close marks the final chapter for Pizza Temptations, which began its journey a decade ago in Upper Coomera under the helm of founders Daniel Pirrone-Cook and Belinda Ann Karcoushkas. The original location closed in August of last year, leaving the North Lakes store as the sole remaining outpost of the franchise.

News of the closure has sparked an outpouring of support and reminiscing from loyal customers on social media. Many expressed sadness at losing a local favourite, with some sharing fond memories of the Oldfields and their staff. One commenter even thanked the couple for providing their children with valuable work experience.

While the reasons behind the closure remain undisclosed, it is clear that Pizza Temptations has left a lasting impression on the North Lakes community. As the last embers of the franchise fade, the memories of delicious pizzas and warm service will undoubtedly continue to linger.
